How do I install yum on CentOS 4? Print

If yum is not installed on your VPS/server, you can install it via SSH. First check the version of your OS. You can do that from shell:

cat /etc/redhat-release

If you are on CentOS 4, you can download the yum rpm and its required packages and install them. Typically this is what is required on a plain CentOS 4.4 vps/server:

rpm -ivh sqlite-3.3.3-1.2.i386.rpm

rpm -ivh sqlite-devel-3.3.3-1.2.i386.rpm

rpm -ivh python-elementtree-1.2.6-4.2.1.i386.rpm

rpm -ivh python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.i386.rpm

rpm -ivh python-urlgrabber-2.9.8-2.noarch.rpm

rpm -ivh yum-2.4.3-1.c4.noarch.rpm

You can find these rpm files from centos.org public mirrors. Here is one working at the time of writing this KB:

http://altruistic.lbl.gov/mirrors/centos/4.4/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/

Note: the above are exactly for CentOS 4.4. For other versions, you may need different packages/versions. You can try installing yum rpm for your particular version and the rpm program will lead you to other required packages.
